Writing Again

Hello everyone,

We are working on a new EP! Some of you may know that we are expecting a baby in early June (...whaah? Yes). Because of this, we know that this coming year is going to be pretty nutty. With that in mind, we hope to get much of a new EP written and (hopefully mostly) recorded before the baby comes, with the goal of getting it released by fall/winter.

It may be flat-out madness to think we can do it, but we are so excited to give it a go. We already have sketches for five songs and probably more in our souls, so we'll see what comes out.

These are pictures from a storm this week here in LA. It's pretty rare to see such a lovely sight here. Growing up in New Mexico, we had rainbows and thunderstorms a-plenty, but here it is a rare treat.

Inspiration comes by a different road for us on every album. We have our ears perked and are listening intently for clues. "I hear you singing in the wires..."

We'll be sharing the journey of writing this little bundle of love here on the blog and on our Twitter page. Thank you for coming along, once again.

Haiti Earthquake Relief

To fill you in, every year we record a couple of songs just for fun, to thank you for being our fans. This year, we decided to do a few Muppet songs, so we went with "I Don't Want To Live On The Moon" from Sesame Street and "Saying Goodbye" from The Muppets Take Manhattan. Both songs are written by the incomparable Jeff Moss.

Fun Fact: "Saying Goodbye" marks the first Endless song with David sharing lead vocal duty. We got pretty silly and it turned into a Piaf-tinged French chanson. Very fun.

Art Begets Art

We are back from what felt like a somewhat long trip. We went with my dad on a cruise on the Queen Mary 2 from New York up the East Coast to Nova Scotia, Canada. It was a really interesting experience. Cruising is strange. Here are a couple of pictures:

We then spent a few days in our old stomping grounds, NYC. While there, I had a bit of a mystical experience at the MoMA with a piece of art that just grabbed me by the throat. Edvard Munch's The Storm.I don't recall noticing the painting in the past. You never know when or why art is going to hit you. Even looking at this here online doesn't have the same emotional impact (reproductions rarely do).
There was something about that moment, in that space, that broke me. I was shaking. I love Munch's work. He evokes for me a sense of beauty, isolation, and terror that can be overwhelming. This woman in the night on this dark path - I understand her. I want to know what she's going to do. Where she will go, because clearly she is outside the circle of women and way out side the warmth of the house lights. Yet she carries her own light.

I'm always grateful for moments like this because I feel music in them. I feel a song, a story, or just the shape of something that I can pull up a month or even years from now in my writing. Visual art is a primary way we both get inspiration to write. It works differently for David because he gets inspired by structure/color/light and I get inspired by the story. Which is great and why we work so wonderfully together.

Right now as I type this, David is recording guitar and MIDI parts for the 2009 Holiday Single. The holiday single is always fun. I feel it's a way to be a bit care-free and do things outside the normal "Endless-y" way of writing. I hope you'll like what we're up to this year!

In other news, the music video for "Lit From Within", directed by Bob Blunden of Bath, England, is scheduled to debut on December 1st. Look for it here!

Harvest Time Again

Hi friends, is it Fall where you are? Or Spring? Crisping leaves or budding petals?

We are busy tinkering away (in the still rather blistering LA heat) in our studio on pulling apart Somniloquy and re-weaving it for playing live (I know you have heard this line before but I swear, if you saw what we had to do computer-wise, you'd understand the delay - long story). We might even be writing some new songs, and also scheming about our upcoming Holiday Single (can it already be time for that again?). If you missed it, last year's holiday single was a tribute to the music of Mr. Rogers.

Did you got a chance to see the new music video for "Hunt For The Heart"? We think Mathias Erixon did a lovely job. We are currently in production on a new video for the opening track from the album, "Lit From Within." Expect a beautiful new creation from a great UK-based director just in time for the holidays!

We also wanted to let you know that our song "Was I Not Your Muse?" is being featured on the AAA evening playlist this fall on the Women of Substance radio show. The show can be heard on Tuesday nights from 7 - 8 PM PST here. Also, our cover of Neil Young's "After The Gold Rush" is currently being featured on the WomensRadio channel which you can listen to here.

New Review and Sneak Peak of the Monster!

We are so close to premiering the Hunt For The Heart video! @MathiasOddity is hard at work at putting the finishing touches on it. Here is a picture of the monster that our heroine is hunting in the video:

We are also still slogging through a million plug-ins, trying to re-create Somniloquy in Logic (it was made in Cubase) so we can play out live. David is an extreme champion of computer skillz and we are coming to the top of the (much higher than we expected) mountain. I am cooking up all kinds of ideas for the live show and trying to learn how to play the music we wrote.

Somniloquy has gotten a really cool review in ReGen magazine. Some quotes:

A very lovely glimpse of otherworldly realms..."Was I Not Your Muse?" is one of the album's most beautiful gems, with a powerful vocal performance that conveys exceptionally strong feelings of love, loss, and a tinge of anger...

The album culminates with "Rosabelle: Answer-Tell," a superbly arranged piece that blissfully ebbs and flows between mellow, understated, and melancholy moments and strong, poignant, and boisterous moments with Adriana Roze once again astonishing the listener with the range of emotion in her voice.

You might recall that the song was made with the help of you, our sweet and dedicated fans, who sent in your dreams on a special hotline for us to share. Welcome, New Comic-Con Friends!

We have dragged our half-conscious selves back home after a week and a half of trips which culminated at Comic-Con in San Diego this weekend. Special extra hellos to those nice people who made the trip extra fun along the way. @vampandora, @DaveMcKean (who instantly recognized the ectoplasm on our album cover), the lovely Allen Speigel of Allen Speigel Fine Arts, Tom at Century Guild Fine Arts (whose Doctor Who CD I accidentally lifted), Rebecca and the Wonder Woman at the Masquerade viewing (there were a few moments there where we were laughing so hard I think we almost lost our minds).

A quick re-cap:

We started last week in Costa Mesa, CA seeing Tears For Fears (David long-time fan, first time viewer, very satisfying to hear Woman in Chains live). We then made our way to Phoenix to see Tori Amos at the Dodge Theatre. When we got to our hotel (the Royal Palms), we were surprised by an incredible upgrade to the 8 ROOM, 4 PATIO-ed Presidential Villa. It was NUTS. We quickly grabbed our camera and took as many pictures of us in the space as possible:

It was also David's birthday, so it was an extra special treat. We had an incredible meal in their restaurant, T. Cook's.

Then at the Tori show we got the chance to meet the awesome Robyn of FoodPorn.com.

Second row seats meant a chance to watch the incredible Jon Evans in action.

Even though it was a mind-melting 115 degrees, the show was really fantastic.

We then travelled to New Mexico for family purposes. We arrived in San Diego on Friday, in time to catch Neil Gaiman and company talk Coraline, which was nice.

The one, solitary picture we took with our camera at the con. Boo. The rest of our pics are from our phone and are on our TwitPic feed.

So, that's the current scoop. We are off now to work on the live show (yes, we are still working on the live show. Computer hell). Hopefully we'll have some news on that front very soon.

Unfortunately, due to Facebook's labyrinthine rules, we weren't able to get our preferred choice, which would be /theendless, so we had to settle for /theendlessband. Can You Be The Hunter?

For the most part, the shoot went well. I had two characters. The wolf:
And the lamb:Let me just tell you, my friends, I am cozying up here to a character which I saw fully in my mind's eye and genuinely made me cry. I was that attached to it. I kept thinking, "why is this kind of deep and honest connection so hard to conjure when I'm acting, but here I am cozying up to a lumpy piece of cloth and am completely full and in the moment?" I think the answer might be because this is my art and my story. Very interesting.

We had a light blow out about 20 seconds into the first take which you can witness in all its glory here:
Silliness. My sister Victoria is a makeup artist so she came to make me perty, which was nice. I think we have a couple of pics of her working on me behind the scenes which I will post.

A big and hearty thank you to Maron Studio for the use of their green screen (and the very fun shoot for their movie the day before). We are now sending off the footage to Mathias in Sweden who will hopefully be able to use some of it (*crossing fingers*). We'll let you know how it went!

The Heart Of You Is What Is True

This Sunday we are going to shoot a video for our song "Hunt For The Heart" with Mathias Erixon (aka Oddity). We found him via Radar Music Videos and are really excited about working with him. He has an impressive background in videos, just see his previous work at www.oddity.se. His ideas for the song are really exciting, and we loved that we can work long-distance together (he is in Sweden, we are in Los Angeles). We will be doing a green screen shoot on Sunday and then he'll be working on the collage/animation aspect of the video on his end. Very, very exciting.

I've been haunting our local shops for just the right costumes for the video. There are two characters/aspects to portray and I think they are starting to come into focus. A lot of greys, lavenders, and whites. Maybe some feathers, we'll see.

I also have a shoot for a role in The Diamonds of Metro Valley, so it's going to be a full weekend. More pics to come on Sunday!

"Writers and artists aren't machines."

There is a really excellent blog today from Neil Gaiman, who goes into some detail about the time and energy it takes to create.

You don't choose what will work. You simply do the best you can each time. And you try to do what you can to increase the likelihood that good art will be created.

And sometimes, and it's as true of authors as it is of readers, you have a life. People in your world get sick or die. You fall in love, or out of love. You move house. Your aunt comes to stay. You agreed to give a talk half-way around the world five years ago, and suddenly you realise that that talk is due now. Your last book comes out and the critics vociferously hated it and now you simply don't feel like writing another. Your cat learns to levitate and the matter must be properly documented and investigated. There are deer in the apple orchard. A thunderstorm fries your hard disk and fries the backup drive as well...

And life is a good thing for a writer. It's where we get our raw material, for a start. We quite like to stop and watch it.

This is so true, and lately I have been acutely aware of how much life has been putting us on a bit of an unwanted hiatus. It happens. I used to fight it in the past but in the last few years I have realized how futile that fight is. I think that's why Somniloquy was a lot less stressful of a record to make, because we didn't fight against life, we worked when life let us.

Reading this blog led to a conversation this morning with my friend Matt, a fellow writer, who offered the following observation:

mattnuez13 (10:52:07 AM): and I realized, more consciously perhaps than I have before, how much of an actor you both are, as a band, in creating your albums
mattnuez13 (10:52:28 AM): and that has so much to do with how scenic and storytelling-landscape-esque your productions are
mattnuez13 (10:52:43 AM): you guys find an idea, and then follow it down the rabbit hole
mattnuez13 (10:52:53 AM): and immerse yourself in it and research and ponder

He's right, and it's something I've never considered before, that because I come to this music process as a life-long classically trained actor, I can't help but put a million miles of thought and research and backstory and almost Meisner-level preparation into the songs. Funny thing to not realize after all this time, but it makes perfect sense that one discipline informs the other. Thank you, Matt!

This all being said, we are working on a lot of projects right now that we are looking forward to sharing with you all as soon as the Flying Spaghetti Monster allows.

Choosing A Video Director

We recently learned about a great website called Radar Music Videos which helps match bands with video directors. So we have submitted a call for treatments for our song "Hunt For The Heart" and have gotten some absolutely awesome pitches! We are mulling over our choices and are really impressed and excited with the quality of directors that are working with the site. If you are a band in search of a video, check out Radar!

Gearing Up

We went on a journey to the outer edges of Los Angeles-land last night to get our hands on a keyboard that we can use for live shows. It was so far, I think we might have actually gone over the rainbow. But it was worth it, as we now have a new 62-key family member who is not even remotely as heavy as our 88-key weighted keyboard who simply hates leaving the house. Some instruments just aren't as comfortable playing live as in the studio.

The gears are cranking up ever so slowly for playing out. You are probably wondering why this is taking so long. A little back story: this last year we've made the transition from PC to Mac, and have been working hard to get all of our stuff backed up from Cubase into some kind of semblance of order for Logic. We are in the beginning stages of learning how to use Mainstage, which is Logic's live counterpart. This means having to essentially unravel every bit of what all of our songs were made of and re-assembling them piece by piece. Then we have to figure out what can be played on instruments live, what can be created live in loops, and what needs to be stripped away.

We are also on the search for live band mates. This will be an interesting process of discovery. As soon as the Endless Live Machine gets itself whirring, then we can play and play and play as much as possible. It's just the getting there that is proving to be the challenge. This is what you get for writing electronic music (and having a day job).

We are also in the pre-writing stages for the next album, which means lots and lots of intake. It means museums, travel, nature, films, painting, playing, and just generally consuming life in the hopes that it will bring inspiration over the next year. With that in mind, we had a little trip to the ocean this weekend and met these guys:

We've got some new and enchanting reviews of Somniloquy to share with you today! The wonderful goth webzine Morbid Outlook says "These tracks are dream-laced, echo-ridden, and haunting," and UK-based rock review site Leicester Bangs calls our music "as Gothic and as funereal as The Cure’s Faith-era output." David did a little jig when he read that. We are sensing a Goth trend here, which we will gladly accept.

Still getting ready for live shows. It's taking a lot of computery work. We've been less bloggy and more tweety lately. I'm sure you understand. Please join us there if you can.
